How import duty is calculated
Almost every customs authority follows the same three-step logic: classify the goods with an HS code, value them under the WTO valuation rules, then apply the rate for that code and the country of origin.
Duty = Customs value × duty rate
Import VAT/GST = (Customs value [+ freight/ins on FOB basis] + all duties + excise) × VAT rate
Ad valorem, specific and compound duties
This calculator handles ad valorem duties — a percentage of value, which covers most manufactured goods. Some products (many foods, alcohol, tobacco, textiles in some markets) carry specific duties charged per kilogram, litre or item, or a compound mix of both. For those, convert the specific part to a percentage for your shipment, or ask a broker.
Preferential rates and origin
If your goods qualify as originating under a free trade agreement, the preferential rate may be far lower — sometimes zero. Qualification depends on rules of origin and proper proof (a certificate or origin statement). Never claim a preference you cannot document: penalties and back-duties can exceed the saving.
Additional tariffs, anti-dumping duties and temporary measures can be introduced or withdrawn quickly. Always check the live official tariff on the day you price an order.
Frequently asked questions
Which countries use FOB vs CIF valuation?
The United States, Canada and Australia generally use the transaction (FOB-type) value, so international freight is not dutiable. The European Union, United Kingdom, India, China and most other countries use CIF. Confirm the rule for your destination.
What is a de minimis threshold?
It is a value below which duty (and sometimes tax) is not collected, mainly to simplify low-value parcels. Thresholds differ widely between countries and have been changing, so check your customs authority before relying on one.
Is import VAT a cost to my business?
For VAT/GST-registered businesses it is usually reclaimable, so it affects cash flow more than profit. For unregistered importers and consumers, it is a real cost.
Where do I find my exact duty rate?
In your country's official online tariff, searched by HS code and origin. Links to major official tariffs are on our resources page and in the HS chapter finder.
