CBM Calculator
Add every carton size in your shipment and instantly see total cubic metres, weight, revenue tons and how much of a 20', 40' or 40' High Cube container you will fill.
The CBM formula
From centimetres: (L × W × H) ÷ 1,000,000
From inches: (L × W × H) ÷ 61,024
Total CBM = CBM per carton × number of cartons · 1 CBM = 35.315 ft³
Measure the outside of the packed carton, including bulges and pallet overhang. Freight is billed on what the carton occupies, not on the product inside.
Container capacity at a glance
| Container | Internal size (approx.) | Total volume | Realistic load |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20' Standard | 5.90 × 2.35 × 2.39 m | ~33 CBM | ~25–28 CBM |
| 40' Standard | 12.03 × 2.35 × 2.39 m | ~67 CBM | ~55–58 CBM |
| 40' High Cube | 12.03 × 2.35 × 2.70 m | ~76 CBM | ~65–68 CBM |
| 45' High Cube | 13.56 × 2.35 × 2.70 m | ~86 CBM | ~75–78 CBM |
Realistic load is lower than total volume because cartons rarely tessellate perfectly and need space for loading. The calculator measures fill against the realistic figure. Exact specs differ by carrier and container age — check with your forwarder. For carton-by-carton fitting, use the container load calculator.
FCL or LCL?
As a rule of thumb, shipments under about 13–15 CBM usually move more cheaply as LCL (a shared container, billed per CBM or per 1,000 kg, whichever is greater). Above that, a full 20' container often costs about the same and is faster and safer. Always compare both quotes — rates move with the market.
Frequently asked questions
What does CBM stand for?
Cubic metre — a box measuring 1 m × 1 m × 1 m. It is the standard unit for pricing sea freight and planning container loads.
What is W/M in LCL shipping?
“Weight or measure.” LCL is charged on whichever is greater: the volume in CBM or the weight in metric tons (1,000 kg = 1 revenue ton). Dense cargo is charged by weight; light cargo by volume.
How many cartons fit in a 40ft container?
It depends on carton size and stacking. Divide usable volume by carton CBM for a quick estimate, then use the container load calculator to account for orientation and the payload limit.
Why is my forwarder's CBM different?
Forwarders measure the cargo as received, often palletised. Pallets add volume and height. Ask whether your quote is based on loose cartons or pallets.
